The chair itself

Every spec on this page, in plain English. Massage chairs are a big purchase, and the industry buries the important stuff under acronyms. Tap any term.

2D, 3D, 4D — what the numbers mean

The number tells you how the rollers move. 2D rollers travel up-down and side-to-side at one fixed depth. 3D adds depth: the rollers push into your back harder or softer, so you choose how deep the massage goes. 4D adds changing speed mid-stroke, which is what makes it feel like human hands instead of a machine on a loop. If you want real deep-tissue work, treat 3D as the minimum; 4D feels the most human and costs the most.

S-track, L-track, SL, J-track

The track is the rail the rollers ride along your body. An S-track follows the curve of your spine from neck to lower back and is best for stretch programs. An L-track keeps going under the seat, so the rollers also massage your glutes and hamstrings. SL and J tracks combine both ideas. Longer track means more of you gets massaged; S-track chairs usually stretch you harder. The number before it (like 49") is the track's length.

Zero gravity recline

The chair reclines until your knees sit slightly above your heart, the posture NASA designed for astronauts at launch. Your weight spreads evenly across the chair, pressure comes off your spine, and the rollers press deeper without you tensing up. Most chairs offer two or three zero-gravity stages.

Zero wall / space-saving

A zero-wall chair slides forward as it reclines instead of tipping backward, so it can sit a few inches from your wall instead of two feet. The spec to check is the clearance number: 2" to 6" on the chairs we carry. If your room is tight, this matters more than almost any massage feature.

Airbag compression

Air cushions built into the arms, shoulders, hips, calves, and footrest inflate and squeeze, like a blood-pressure cuff. The rollers handle your back; the airbags handle everything the rollers can't reach. More airbags with independent zone control means the squeeze lands where you want it and skips where you don't.

Body scanning

Before the massage starts, the chair maps your height, shoulder position, and back curve, then adjusts the rollers to your body instead of an average person's. This is why two people can use the same chair and both get a massage that lands in the right spots.

Reflexology foot rollers

Spinning textured rollers under your soles that press the pressure points a foot massage therapist would work with thumbs. Heat therapy
